Staff training

WDI works with employers to assist with training needs for their current staff. We offer classes for workers to gain job skills, life skills, soft skills and English language skills for employment.

We can help employers access training through area colleges and other training providers or create a specific training plan to meet an employer’s needs. Workforce Development, Inc. offers training services to improve employee retention, to enhance employee opportunities for career advancement and to provide a positive training environment. Classes may be offered at the work site or at the WorkForce Center depending on needs, space and equipment.

Labor market information

Our staff meets with employers to conduct labor market surveys that provide the 10-county area with local information on training, staff development and business needs.

On-the-job training contracts

Employers can receive reimbursement for training wages, up to 90% depending upon the company size, for eligible new hires during the initial training period that can extend to six months.

Focus groups

WDI can conduct yearly focus groups with human resource representatives and business owners to discuss current employment and training needs.

Wage subsidy contracts

We offer an incentive contract that provides reimbursement for wages to train eligible new hires.

Employer-based mentoring

Our pilot mentor program materials and mentor training are designed after a leading model developed by Gordon F. Shea, a national expert on mentoring and management issues. Programs based on this model are experiencing great success in businesses nationwide, including the U.S. Coast Guard. According to a poll conducted by the National Welfare to Work Partnership, mentoring has a significant impact on employees entering the workforce:

  • 75% of businesses reported improved work performance,
  • 67% reported higher job retention,
  • 63% reported reduced absenteeism, and
  • 52% found cost savings for their company.
